Teenage Meditation Classes

Over the school holidays I was fortunate to co-run a Teenage Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Class. This is an area that I am very passionate about, especially because I have two teenage children at home (with two more to come!).

From my own experience with my teenagers, helping them to be happy and calm individuals can be an ever changing (and often challenging) task. I believe one of the best things I can do for my children is to be present with them, to help guide and nurture them along the way, yet I cannot do this if I myself am feeling anxious or stressed out. I need to help myself in order to help them. I know this to be true everyday of our lives, when I am feeling better I am able to be the mother they need me to be at any given time (or mood!).

I have found, one of the best things to help all of us, is meditation and giving them a calmer and more centred base to start from, as when their base is calmer then the highs and lows of life won’t be so high or low, causing even greater unnecessary distress.

Here are a couple of pictures of my two gorgeous teenagers doing their Vision Board, as part of the Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Class…

Meditation for children these days is easily accessible with a variety of different aps, which children can use on a daily basis, whether it be before study, before bed or even to start off their day. Meditation does not need to take a long time or be hard, it is something you can practice together in a quiet room with a candle lit.

If you would prefer a more formal meditation setting then please email ([email protected]) me to come along to your free trial of my weekly teenage (and adult) meditation classes I run.

Love Your Brain!

With 4 school aged children in both primary and high school, I am very passionate about how to support children’s brains in learning. hence I have developed a program called ‘Love Your Brain’.

Our brains are just like any other muscle in our body, it needs to be exercised and looked after to function at its optimum level.

What can I do to help support my children’s brain in learning???

  • Water and lots of it! Check out my previous blog on the importance of water.
  • Make sure they are eating food high in protein (at every meal), check out my previous blog here on protein.
  • Encourage them to do brain exercises, check out my previous blog on some simple brain exercises.
  • Allow for relaxation time, time for the brain to unwind and relax. I love talking my kids through a gentle meditation before they go off to sleep.
  • Ensure they are getting enough sleep. Sleep is when the brain repairs itself, develops and allows it to relax a be ready for another day at school.
  • Have fun with my kids. As much as learning and discipline is important it is just as important that our brains have fun, to allow for our feel good endorphins to be released within our bodies.
  • Keep out additives, colourings, flavourings and preservatives from their diets. These are artificial products and can cause the brain to go either hyper, confused or anxious.
  • Lots of love and guidance. Some of the basic needs of our children are to feel safe and loved, if they do not feel this then their brains will not function as calmly and effectively as possible.

It does seem like a lot of things to do for our children’s brain, yet it really is not and I am sure you are already doing a few of these points.

It is about seeing your child’s brain as a focus and nurturing it through these different points.

Based on these points I will be running a webinar called ‘Love Your Brain’. It is a 1 hour webinar containing lots of information about how you can help improve the function of your child’s brain. These webinars are very informative and a must for all parents and teachers. To register for this ‘must see’ webinar please click here.

Until my next blog, enjoy your children and don’t forget to Love their Brains!

Slow down..

How often do you get caught up in the busyness of life, rushing here and there and trying to be a super-woman/man to get everything done! I know I have been guilty of this many times before.

Yet all that we are doing is creating an existence of busyness with not much time left over for ourselves. When this happens we tend to lose sight of what is REALLY important in the bigger picture and get stuck in the day top day errands of life.

“Life just ends up slipping away as days roll into weeks and weeks roll into months and months roll into years.”

For me, this is something I have been focusing on a lot recently, especially as the busyness of being a Mother has kicked into full swing with school and after-school activities. I don’t want my children to grow up in an existence of ‘hurry up’ or in a state of focusing on what else needs to be done. I want them to grow up seeing that in this moment we are who we are, not focusing on the next moment. In this moment is where we can create a future we desire filled with peace, love and happiness (as this moment will dictate to the next moment and so on). I know this is what I want for my children, yet I also know that in order to teach this to my children, I need to live and breathe this.

Take a breathe and just slow down! Take the pressure off and allow yourself to see in the bigger picture of life, it does not matter if the washing is not ironed perfectly or if the floors are not mopped every week!

Make a commitment to yourself to BE IN THE MOMENT and ALLOW THAT MOMENT TO BE!

Bully Zero Australia Foundation

Bully Zero Australia Foundation are proud to endorse my book, Beyond The Schoolyard. On Friday 1st August we had a joint launch party for my book at LaManna in Essendon.

Here is what Oscar Yildiz JP (CEO) said about my book…

‘I came into contact with Debbie as a result of this book. She was a victim of bullying during her school years and is a passionate advocate for helping other women who have had the same experiences during their early years of childhood. Through this book, she is able to reach many people and help guide them into a happier and confident life away from bullying. Debbie works one on one with many individuals to help and support them in a personal and structured approach. Debbie is aligned with our mission at Bully Zero Australia Foundation to provide genuine and enduring care for bullying victims and their families, especially mothers. We stand united in our quest to create a tomorrow where our children and adolescents live a fulfilling life free from all forms of bullying.’

No more comparing!

Today I want to talk about how important it is to NOT compare ourselves to others.

Often we get caught up in wishing our life was different or like someone elses, whether it be a relationship, piece of clothing or handbag. We become caught up in the “if onlys”, if only I was like that person, if only I had a relationship like they have, if only I was thinner like that person and the list goes on and on.

When we focus on what other people have and who other people are, we lose sight of what we have in our lives and what we stand. This is because we put all of our focus on the “If only’s” rather than what is right now!

In actual fact, it does not make a difference if all your “If only’s” were fulfilled! You will still be the same person with the same thoughts and feelings, you may think it will make all the difference, but trust me once you get that “if only” filled you will quickly find another “if only” to focus on.

This is because we need to deal with our internal feelings that are causing us to feel the need to want something other than what we have right now. By fulfilling ourselves from the inside, we will be able to let go of the need to have “if only’s” in our lives!

Let go of your need / desire / want to be like someone else. Focus on what you have and be grateful for everything and everyone in your life.

To help with this I encourage you to write in a gratitude diary every night. I write four things that I am grateful for in that day. I focus on everything about me, the good and the not so good bits!

There is even gratitude to be had from a not so good situation in our life, as you have the opportunity to learn and develop as a person.

Start to focus on yourself, always focusing on your internal emotions and thoughts, rather than looking on the outside wishing for something that may or may not be possible.

Be grateful and enjoy your life with what you have and everyone in your life.

Until my next blog, enjoy your children.

National Day of Action Against Bullying

Today is the National Day of Action Against Bullying, March 21st 2014.

Today is an important day as it brings awareness to bullying in our communities – not only in schools but also in the cyber world.

This awareness is something that is very close to my heart. I was bullied as a child and I bought these feelings of low self-worth and insecurities into my adult life, especially as I became a mother. They stayed with me and the remnant of the bullying haunted me for many years on. Until I was able to stop and look within to see what was emotionally going inside which was keeping the past bullying alive in my present life.

I needed to deal with my internal feelings and emotions, rather than looking at the incidents themselves. To move past the drama and emotion of the bullying experience is a hard one to do, but a necessary step to finally let go of the past. Now I have been able to move past the bullying and step into a new confident and happier me.

“Finally I let go of that negative bullying I experienced and I learnt to love myself, just as I am”.

This is what my book, Beyond the Schoolyard is all about. It is a step by step guide of what I went through and what I have helped many of my clients go through as well – to move above and beyond the taunts of bullies!

In honour of today, National day of Action Against Bullying, I encourage and challenge you to do a random act of kindness to someone today, it can be a total stranger or someone you know.

Let’s start to share the love around and put an end to bullying. I would love to hear from you about what act of kindness you did today.

Until my next blog, enjoy your children.

Time Freedom for Busy Mum’s Hot Tip

I wanted to share with you one of my hot tips from a workshop I ran last night on ‘Time Freedom for Busy Mums’.

To get control of our ‘out-of-control’ lives we need to start to look at the underlying emotional causes that are reason why we feel overwhelmed and out of control on the outside.

It is about going inside to see what our internal thoughts and internal belief patterns are which are causing us on the outside to feel crazy, out of control and like we are not getting anything done.

An example of this is if you feeling like you are not good enough, a not good enough Mother or a not good enough partner or whatever it maybe in your life. By focusing on these feelings of not being good enough, which are our internal feelings, we are able to make changes to these feeling on the inside.  Allowing us to feel more confident in our abilities and more in control of what is going on. At the end of the day, when you feel calmer on the inside it shows on the outside and life does tend to flow easier.

We need to continue to look at our internal feelings before we can focus on our external world.  Once we are able to make these changes internally, these will then reflect to the outside world.

Focusing on our internal emotions is what is important. Take your focus away from the emotion and drama that our crazy busy lives bring us. Make the change to focus on what is important and what we can change to ultimately make those long lasting changes to our lives.

Until my next blog, enjoy your children.
